Heather Newport Founder & Desert Garden Coach

I am a longtime Phoenix resident and passionate gardener who believes everyone can grow a thriving, productive garden—even in the challenging Arizona desert.

My expertise comes from years of hands-on trial, error, and ultimate success in my own yard. I started Protozoa Garden Consulting and Design to take the guesswork out of desert gardening for my neighbors in Scottsdale and the Valley.

Whether I’m designing a custom layout, coaching you through seasonal planting schedules, or caring for your plants while you’re away, my goal is simple: to give you the practical skills, sustainable habits, and confidence to enjoy a flourishing, water-wise garden year-round.

"

I specialize in helping homeowners grow productive vegetable gardens, fruit trees, pollinator habitats, and beautiful outdoor spaces using healthy soil practices, water-wise techniques, and plants that are well-suited to the Desert Southwest. Every recommendation is based on seasonal timing, long-term success, and practical solutions—not quick fixes.

Local Desert Gardening Expertise

I am a longtime Phoenix-area gardener who has tested plants, soils, and irrigation in real backyards, so every recommendation fits this climate and your specific garden space.

Teacher First, Designer Second

I design and install gardens while teaching you how to care for them, explaining timing, watering, and pest control so you feel confident instead of overwhelmed in your own yard.

Sustainable, Water-Wise Gardens

I focus on native and desert-adapted plants, healthy soil, and smart irrigation, creating spaces that conserve water, feed pollinators, grow food, and stay manageable for your lifestyle and budget.
